Have you ever heard the saying, “go with your gut?” Our gut controls about 80% of our immune system. It’s often referred to as the second brain of our body. We have this amazing powerhouse right smack dab in the center of our bodies that controls so many aspects of our quality of life. Do you ever wonder why there are so many illnesses today that ultimately the root of the illness is immune dysfunction? There are currently 100 (One HUNDRED) auto-immune illnesses diagnosed. If you are not familiar with auto-immunity, some of the more commonly referred to illnesses that are auto-immune are MS (multiple sclerosis), Lupus, Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid arthritis. You probably have seen primetime TV commercials that reference some of these illnesses.

Unfortunately – those commercials are merely referencing a band-aid solution to symptoms by suppressing the immune system to mute the immune response but they don’t actually address the root cause.

In may cases, the root cause begins with genetics and mutations within the genes and its just a matter of time for illness to become symptomatically unsurpassable so the medical community is sought. In some cases the gut will leak simply due to a decline in our nutrition quality. The grains we had 30 years ago are not the grains we have today.

Have you ever head of the term “leaky gut”? Our intestines are designed to be non-permeable. They transport our waste. Our digestive system begins in the mouth and ends at the colon. There are 4 elements that cause the gut to “leak”.

  • Gluten – Gluten is the most notorious offender of Leaky Gut.

  • Conventional dairy – The protein in most conventional cow’s milk and dairy is called A1 casein. This protein can trigger a similar reaction as gluten and, therefore, should be avoided. In fact, A1 casein may be 26x more inflammatory than gluten!

  • Sugar – We all know sugar isn’t the healthiest food. But what many don’t know is the too much sugar can damage the intestinal wall creating a leaky gut. This happens because sugar feeds yeast and bad bacteria.

  • GMO foods – Genetically modified organisms contain herbicides and pesticides that damage the gut lining.    The inflammation these foods create brings negative responses, including inflammation, fatigue and food allergies.

When holes are perforated in the intestinal walls (what is supposed to be sealed to transport waste) the waste will then leak through the holes into the body and this becomes a foreign invader. Alarms will sound off as the inflammation ensues and then you have the various attacks on systems, tissue, and parts of the body where the body is attacking itself. For me, I experienced this illness in my early 30s after having had 3 children and the gland that was attacked in my body was the thyroid gland. (Hashimoto’s thyroid disease) I wasn’t the type of person that was looking for a pharmaceutical band aid. I wanted to know why at such a young age I had such a poor quality of life so I began researching to look for answers.

What I learned was that in order for true healing to occur you have to:
1. Stop penetrating holes in the intestinal wall. (Gluten, Dairy, Yeast and Pesticides)
2. Seal the holes up.
This type of healing is possible and I am on the other side of this illness having been symptom free for over 4 years now. I found some great quality supplement to help decrease the inflammation response in my body, put some powerful nutrition in place and I sealed the holes up with an all natural approach with the right combination of ingredients. I have helped a lot of people in my practice become symptom free of their auto-immune illness as well, so I know healing is possible and auto-immunity is reversible. This is not an answer you will get from modern medicine. Their training is to match pharmaceuticals to symptoms and not to treat the root cause. In my practice when I learn that someone has an illness like thyroid disease, I help them first establish whether or not they are auto-immune and then encourage them the importance of sealing up the holes in the gut and to stop penetrating new holes.

The scary aspect of auto-immunity is if you don’t stop the gut from leaking, the constant state of inflammation that the body is in, cause cause further inflammation and more auto-immune illnesses to occur. There is hope and there are better ways. Be your best advocate and know that you deserve to be well as you ARE worth it!
